Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a colorful mix of personalities, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, fiends, and malevolent powers growing in power within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Key plot points for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The latest chapter finished on a dramatic pause and introduced the premier party of characters who will separate from the main group to embark on their own adventure, apart from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table consists of the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), the cleric (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

With a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that keeping everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

Hence, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Introduction, connecting the personal journeys before splitting into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Planners, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

As described by the DM, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented gameplay experience where diplomatic options are few and far between.

At first glance, figures such as the reluctant priest the cleric might seem mismatched, but the developments of episode 3 make it clear why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the group understands precisely where to head next after a intense opening clash with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose demise kicked off the story’s plot—used the enemy for his own means, entering the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and taking all the enchanted items to auction.

The antagonist then cleared his obligations and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each member has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, desires retribution.
  • Kattigan is familiar with Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous place.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to kill the target and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could assist the party access locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, Teor swore a life debt to The cleric for his rescue and will now follow him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are sought by the rulers that govern the city for a multiple motives, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • Teor is marked for death by House Halovar.

This results in them no alternative but to travel to Timmony in pursuit of the antagonist.

Upcoming Developments

From the recent installment’s Cooldown, we discover that the combat party won’t be around the following episode, leaving the other eight cast members to round up the Explorers and Planners groups.

Fans can expect learning which players will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on October 24.
