From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.

Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.

Questions Prompted by Redactions

While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased openness.

“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.

A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Release

However, some conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly behind the administration.

The release—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.

Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled some conservative voices to launch the attack.

“This is quite rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Former President Campaign Releases Statement

Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.

Overall Conservative Comment Seems Muted

However, broader discourse on the right was comparatively subdued after the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a law mandating the documents' publication.

Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy binders of materials that included no new information.
