The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
